Anya Smolnikova

I'm a local Boston artist working in mixed media. I love playing with light, color and space, using them to explore the relationship between abstraction and reality. I work from life as well as from imagination. My interest lies in the exploration of the space and mythology of crossroads, mutations and fusions. As an Eastern European immigrant, I am myself a product of intercultural alchemy, with its magic and its shadows. My obsession leads me to dumps, memories, family artifacts, thrift stores, ruins, as well as schools and immigrants communities, as I search for the relationship between home, displacement and evolution. I travel to areas of the world where the geologic or cultural formation is fresh and raw, places like the Middle East, the Balkans and Iceland. I search for the archetypal images in the world and the subconscious in order to retrieve a modern and personal mythology.
